India’s first garbage cafe has been launched in Ambikapur, a city in the state of Chhattisgarh.
The innovative idea birthed by the Municipal Corporation will provide food to the poor and homeless in return of plastic waste.
Under this program, any person fetching 1 kg plastic waste will be offered a full meal while those collecting 500 grams waste will get a substantial breakfast.
Not only this, there will also be arrangements for shelter with food for poor and homeless people who collect plastic waste.
The city of Ambikapur, which has been ranked as the second cleanest city in India after Indore, plans to use the plastic for construction of roads.
The Garbage Cafe scheme has been allocated Rs 5 lakh under the budget presented.
The Garbage Cafe scheme is openly linked to the cleanliness campaign ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. The city’s Municipal Corporation has already minimized the use of plastic bags as well has constructed the state’s first road by mixing 8 lakh plastic bag with asphalt.
