Lucky’s Hamburgers, a new burger and milkshake place in Clark, is not your average burger spot. The three co-owners who opened Lucky’s wanted a fresh take on carnival food, complete with the easygoing and lighthearted experience that it comes with.
“We make food that we want to eat,” Natalie Deo, one of the co-owners, said. “It’s indulgent and a good time. Our food’s messy, so we make it so you can eat it with your hands and enjoy it.”
Deo said the idea for the place came through a mutual desire to get back into the food business from her fiancé and his partner, both tattoo shop owners.
She had always wanted to try the business herself, so the three of them opened up Lucky’s in a familiar area from their childhood—Union County. Located on Raritan Road, the restaurant officially opened on July 9.
“It’s a spin on all those favorite mix of fast foods and carnival [foods],” Deo said of the menu, which includes gourmet burgers, hand-cut fries, hot dogs, and their second most popular item—specialty milkshakes.
The milkshake flavors include: a unicorn shake with a strawberry base, a salted pretzel nutella fudge shake, a thin mint one, an edible cookie dough shake, and a banana split one.
Deo creates the whimsical shakes and said the majority of the toppings are homemade, including the homemade Nutella fudge with sea salt. She also makes the colorful unicorn bark, edible cookie dough, and thin mint cookies from scratch.
“I just thought of things that are popular,” Deo said about devising up the shakes. “Unicorns are really popular. How can I take a spin on a unicorn that is trendy right now?”
“It’s that idea of what I can make…into a milkshake, but it’s not exactly a sundae,” she added. “It’s both.” The ice cream, along with most of the menu’s items, are locally sourced.
I had to try out the milkshakes for myself so I stopped by Lucky’s on a recent afternoon. The bright orange walls gave off an enthusiastic carnival vibe, along with the circus-like font for the logo, which Deo designed herself.
I chose the salted pretzel nutella fudge milkshake and downed the mason jar faster than I’d like to admit (which may have been less than 10 minutes).
The shake was delicious—the perfect solution to a sluggish Friday afternoon. Its base was a smooth, chocolate ice cream filled to the brim of a mason jar, which was lined with Deo’s homemade sea salt Nutella and pieces of pretzels on its rim.
Topped with whipped cream, a square of fudge, and two pleasantly charred marshmallows, the shake definitely checked the box for messy and enjoyable food.
Deo said more milkshake flavors are in development, including a peanut butter one that will be introduced this month. Monthly specialty shakes will also be in rotation, and Deo said they hope to involve customer ideas for future suggestions.
She said there’s been plenty of community support and customers are mostly hearing about the food and milkshakes through social media and word of mouth.
The specialty shakes are $9.95 and regular shakes are also available for $3.95, in multiple flavors: vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and mint chocolate chip. Other menu items include corn dogs, fried pickles, and disco fries.
Lucky’s Hamburgers is open 11 am to 9 pm, Tuesday through Saturday. It’s located at 1473 Raritan Road in Clark.
