CLEVELAND, Ohio — Tickets for the Cleveland Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition on the drawings of Michelangelo may be purchased by nonmembers starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, the museum said Tuesday.
Free ticket reservations have already been available to members, the museum said Tuesday.
“Michelangelo: Mind of the Master” will run from Sunday, Sept. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 5. The show is one of the star items on the museum’s list of upcoming shows.
Tickets are free for museum members; prices start at $15 for nonmember adults. Tickets may be reserved online at the museum’s website, by phone at 216-421-7350 or by visiting the museum’s ticket center.
The museum recommends advance reservations.
Organized by the Cleveland Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum with the Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands, the show will focus on nearly 30 drawings by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475–1564).
Works on view will include preparatory sketches for the Sistine Chapel murals, including the “Hand of God” (1511), the detail in which God’s right hand extends to give the spark of life to Adam.
The museum’s news release stated that Michelangelo burned “large quantities” of his drawings, making the surviving pieces all the more important as a way to understand his working process.
The show will center on 25 drawings originally owned by Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-89), coming on loan from the Teylers Museum, which acquired them in 1791.
Many have never been shown outside Europe. The Cleveland show will be the first time the drawings are leaving the Teylers Museum as a group.
The Dutch museum is also lending a portrait drawing of Michelangelo by Daniele Ricciarelli, known as Daniele da Volterra.
The Cleveland museum will contribute a Michelangelo drawing to the exhibit, along with seven other works. The Getty will lend another two other Michelangelo drawings.
The museum said that members may reserve free tickets if their membership is current.
