Frederik Meijer Gardens exhibit turns mums into works of art

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — About 30 different varieties of chrysanthemum flowers are displayed around Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park for its fall exhibit, “Chrysanthemums & More!”

The center point of the exhibition is in the Grace Jarecki Seasonal Display Greenhouse, where flowers and assorted fall plants can be seen displayed on the floor, mounted on wooden frames and hanging from the ceiling.

“You take this familiar plant and we’re utilizing it in very artistic ways to create these spaces that are totally unfamiliar to people,” said Steve LaWarre, director of horticulture at the gardens.

Beyond chrysanthemums, other fall plants displayed around the gardens are Swiss chard, kale, cabbage, apples, pumpkins, gourds and moss.

LaWarre said the chrysanthemum blooms when days get shorter in the year, so it works well as a fall plant. He hopes this exhibit inspires people to see the everyday “garden mum” transformed into a work of art.

“This is such a great combination of art and horticulture,” LaWarre said. “It’s something that’s different for people. There’s a lot of activities going on, so there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.”

The exhibit will be open until the end of October.
