Baking for Good Cooks Up a Tasty Benefit for Black Art Matters

Pop Quiz: 1) Do you like supporting a good cause?
2) Do you like sweets?
If you answered “yes” to either question – and especially is you said “yes” to both – then you need to know what local nonprofit Baking for Good has cooked up to benefit the initiative Black Art Matters.

Baking for Good may be one of the few good things to arise from the pandemic: a nonprofit raising funds for other nonprofits through what it calls “flour power.” Baking for Good selects a charity to support, then solicits home-baked goods to be auctioned off online. The goods come from folks across the city who love to bake (theatregoers may recognize several from the local stage scene) and who also love the cause – the website includes testimonials about the volunteer bakers’ support for the nonprofit getting the, ahem, dough. In May, that was the Central Texas Food Bank, which received $10,678 from a combination of the auctioning off of 22 items, an additional 78 donations, and a matching donation from Siete Family Foods that doubled the amount raised by Baking for Good.

For its sophomore auction, organization founder Andréa Smith has set a goal of $10,000, 100% of which will go directly to the community’s Black artists whose income has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, racism, or both. The funds will be distributed through the Black Art Matters initiative, developed as a partnership of and the Austin Creative Alliance. Naturally, Smith is one of this auction’s bakers, and she’s joined by 46 others who have whipped up a tantalizing assortment of pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, breads, scones, and more. You’d best cover your keyboard with a napkin before you check them out on the website, because scanning the 60 items on offer is is guaranteed to kick your salivary glands into high gear.

Sourdough Trifecta: 1 Sourdough Batard, 1 Sourdough Olive Boule, 1 Garlic Parmesan Herb Twist

Ricotta Abrigado. Dulce de Leche Cheesecake. Brown Butter Peach Torte. Dutch Apple Crumble Pie. Whiskey Apple Hand Pies. Southern Banana Pudding. Southern Pound Cake. Texas Sheet Cake (with or without nuts). Mass Hysteria Cinnamon Crumb Cake. Lime/Coconut/Jalapeño Sugar Cookies. S’mores in a Jar. Milky Way Krispie Treats. Mocha Java Mini Donuts. Crusty Country Bread a la Parisienne. And if you’re trying to cut down on your own baked goods intake, think of your pooch: There’s even Sourdough Dog Treats made with pumpkin and peanut butter!

Bidding for every item starts at $25 – remember the good cause you’re supporting – and each item goes to the highest bidder, which, by the way, will be delivered in a socially-distant, contact-free manner. The auction started Monday and continues through Sat., July 11, and you’ll want to check in right away. Some of the bidding amounts already look more like oven settings than bake-sale prices. Show your support for Black artists and get something singularly tasty in return.
